vi.
No
digan Balzac, Stendhal y Proust).
No me gustan
The Story, a flash
of emotion
José Diaz Diaz
The story as a
narrative genre seems that is going from being considered
"Cinderella" written in prose literature, to lofty Queen and favorite
current mode of storytelling. The inclination of preference of readers who
still cling to this cultural habit, touched by how quickly daily activities are
consumed, seems to prove it. The recent tendency of cultural institutions to
favor dedicated short story writers and invitations to participate in contests
at least says so. It is no coincidence that a writer of short stories, Canadian
Alice Munro in 2013 was the recipient of the most important recognition in the
cultural field such as the Nobel literature prize medal. Perhaps a considerable
indicative for creating the International Short Story Prize Gabriel Garcia
Marquez, in Bogota, with the first prize of one hundred thousand US dollars,
opened in 2014 and granted in its first version to the Argentinean writer
Guillermo Martinez.
To no doubt is
the fact that consolidate this narrative format from works of the greats such
as Poe, Chekhov, Cortazar, Borges; theoretically underpinned judicious work as
Dominican Juan Bosch; or the famous Decalogue of the perfect story writer
Horacio Quiroga; structuralism theory of Vladimir Propp's Tale; or the various
writings on the theory of the story of the same Cortazar, among which we find
the letter sent by him in 1954 to the Mexican Juan Jose Arreola.
But, not to
disperse in dilettantes disquisitions on the very particular issue, I invite
you to focus on the aspect concerning the "psychological time" in
which today's reader is immersed when reading a story; lets speculate on the
perfect extension it should have. To begin, lets put aside from this brief
analysis, the micro story, the style of Augusto Monterroso’stories: When he
awoke, the dinosaur was still there; or Arreola: You were at ground level and
did not see you. I had to dig deep into myself to find you, which are pieces of
deep beauty and wisdom.
We will also
obviate the long stories, to focus on the text of an approximate duration
between 15-25 minutes. Supposedly for the current taste, is the ideal time to
live a high aesthetic emotion of high joy. We should take advantage of this
state of privileged attention, concentration and maximum expectation during
which the reader would be totally seduced by the story that is being narrated
to him, before his attention spans weaken and is diluted by other things. The
valid statement or not relies that everyone lives in a rush, "Living in
the moment, live the moment", listening and one is reading everywhere. In
this sense, the story would fit like a glove, random mode and quick taste the
story, a flash of emotion of postmodern life.
However, the
premise that defends the thesis of intense, deep and briefly perhaps for some
theorical people it is a pilgrim idea that has in the story essential and
substantial elements that characterize it as such and which distinguish the
novel, by comparing it with another narrative form.
The issue for the
storyteller infers an inexcusable commitment: The text must be fulminant and
fatal, which hit knockout records expansive and vertical time on the
consciousness of the reader engrossed.
The perfect
storyteller should structure his narrative within a single space and in a
minimal time, with precise argument and a single protagonist with deep emotions
and dramatic crescendo; with suspense that will take the reader to hunker down
during that primary tense moment, which will open towards the end with
fireworks or the compulsive orgasm sometimes or other, invading the psyche of
the lucky reader with sensations that will shake his being with an unexpected
experience that leads him to react thoroughly seduced by this new inner
adventure that opens the door to move towards the essential.
Either way, the
intention is to leave the convulse and exhausted reader in the conviction of
having gone through a trance of unforgettable beauty.
Finally, lets
summon theoretic lights of opposition between short story and novel. More
evidence to understand why a plastic and radical condensation of the text of
the short story. Nothing better to do than to quote some excerpts from the
letter that Cortázar sent to Arreola (cited above), and it comes right purpose
when compared to some of the elements of the short story with the Novel:
"(...) It is
curious that many storytellers have never thought about gender. I don’t talk of
stylistic reflection, it is not essential, but that primary meditation, in
which collaborate equally intelligence and plexus, and should show the
storyteller the risks of its territory, its complicated topography, and the
responsibility involved. The story is discredited by the stories. Have you seen
what is usually published in magazines? For a good one, for a story that stands
as a cat falling from a fourth floor, the rest are cuts of a much larger
situation (scissors are the laziness of the writer, or his/her inability to
move forward), or diffuse treatments of any theme, good or bad; what really
spoils the latter is always the lack of concentration, of attack.
"(...) They
play football instead of fighting, submit the narrative material to a series of
evolutions and complex combinations, and long term, apply the exclusive
technique of the novel and that it gives wonderful results (Balzac, Stendhal
and Proust). Because they don’t see and this is capital that the story is a
matter of the language forming the narrative language, and then write their
stories exactly with the same more or less discursive language of the novel.
But stepping down, it is not hard to see that this happens because the
Engine thrust of
the story is fictional, and that's the big nightstick as we say in Argentina,
there's the stupidity without forgiveness, believing that a story, which is
pure diamond, can be confused with long operation to find diamonds, that's the
novel. I do not like formulas but I think I'm right here: a story is always the
Golden Fleece, and the novel is the story of the quest for the fleece. The
novel is wonderful, but its technique spoils the story ".
